Sic Parvis Magna Sample Chapter—Good News
His grandparents were in the sitting room, busily discussing the latest events with William Hawkins.
Marjorie turned to greet both boys. “Hello John! My, it is nice to see a smile on your face again, Francis!”
“What mischief have you two gotten yourselves into?” William Hawkins asked with suspicion, also noting the grin on both faces.
“Father, you should have seen Francis handle the Badger. Like a true sailor!”
Francis ducked his head, though finding it hard to hide his pride.
“Has he now? Regular sailor, is he?” said William with an exaggerated nod. “Well then, young sailor, we have splendid news for you. Go ahead, tell him, sister!”
“Your father wrote, Francis.” Marjorie smiled, showing him the letter. “He took a position at the Gillingham Docks, reading prayers to the King’s sailors.”
“Reading prayers?” repeated Francis.
“Aye, the calling he has long sought,” said Marjorie. “But there is more. He and Mary found a place to live, and they bid us to send you to Gillingham!”
Francis’s eyes gave him away, making everyone laugh.
“Wh.. when may I leave, Master Hawkins?”
“Soon enough, lad.” Hawkins’ voice regained his typical gravitas. “With these rebels about, his Majesty is worried about Plymouth’s safety. He dispatched a squadron of ships to protect Plymouth and help restore order. I know the commanding officer, Sir Thomas Cotton. And I believe you know one of the other captains—a certain Richard Drake of a ship called the English Galley. Since we have confidence that all things are under control here, we’ll arrange your passage with them.”
“Uncle Drake? I am going by sea!!!” Francis repeated. “Thank you, Sir!”
“God’s blessing on your journey, Francis!” said John.
After supper, Francis knelt beside his pallet, the happiest 9-year-old in the world. His body still swayed from the movement of the boat, and his face was still red from the salty breeze.
He recited his prayer, then paused at the end.
Was this what father and mother meant? All will be revealed in due time.
He burrowed under his blanket, his mind flying through the Badger’s glorious adventures in distant seas. His hands relaxed from clutching at the fantom sail line as he drifted off to sleep.
