Sic Parvis Magna Update

I am slowly working through the second revision of my historical fiction series Adventures of Francis Drake, Sic Parvis Magna. This revision is about 70% complete, and I am really liking the improvements in the depth of characters in this Tudor period coming of age story.

I am thrilled to share is that the first chapter of the historical fiction novel is fully online. The chapter also includes a portion of the end matter, detailing aspects of the research that went into the book.

I’d love to hear your feedback!

Tudor War Historical Fiction Short Story A Fool’s Errand

As part of my continuing evolution of the characters in Sic Parvis Magna, I’ve indulged myself in a small side-project to benefit the novel.

I am happy to announce that I started drafting the historical fiction short story A Fool’s Errand, set during the 1544 Siege of Montreuil-sur-Mer. This action saw the English invasion of northern France and was the last war campaign of Henry VIII.

The short story features a cast of characters, some of whom you can read about now, such as Henry Howard, the Earl of Surrey, Thomas Howard, the Duke of Norfolk, and younger versions of Sic Parvis Magna’s Gregory Trelawney and George Sampson.

Though Sic Parvis Magna is still the primary project that is getting the bulk of my attention, the 12,000-word historical fiction short story A Fool’s Errand will be released before the novel simply because it is about 1/8 th the size.

More to come in the next edition of the newsletter!

Historical Fiction Book Recommendations

I’ve really enjoyed reading and learning about the Siege of Malta as retold by Peter Portelli.

The Siege of Malta occurred in 1566, when Suleiman the Magnificent sent an army of some 40,000 troops, including the best of the janissaries and his most experienced admiral and general, against roughly 600 Knights Hospitaller, 1200 troops from Italy and Spain, and the island’s Maltese population.

Read my review of Peter Portelli’s historical fiction novel The Order.

I am also hoping to post a review on one of Judith Arnopp’s earlier works, The Winchester Goose, shortly.

My New Best Historical Fiction Books Section

In June and July, I worked on the revamp of the website and am going to start a new feature for Best Historical Fiction Books.

My present thought is to shape this into two sections–works that were written or published before 1900 and works that are more recent.

Stay tuned for updates on that effort.
